Learning mathematics as a student can be challenging, but teaching these concepts as a parent poses an even greater difficulty.

Mathematics rightfully holds the title of ‘The Queen of Sciences’ since it forms the foundation of virtually every field that contributes to the betterment of our world. Indeed, our daily lives revolve around numbers, whether it’s calculating the speed of vehicles or mixing ingredients in precise proportions.

Despite our recognition of the significance of mathematics, grasping math formulas and theorems can be a formidable task for children. Some are naturally drawn to numbers, while others find them intimidating. While there are numerous strategies to teach mathematical processes and ignite a child’s interest, parents often grapple with the challenge of helping their children retain the steps required to solve math problems. Therefore, it is imperative to explore techniques that aid in information retention.

In a recent 2019 study conducted by researchers at Stanford University, a noteworthy discovery was made. Encouraging children to perform mental calculations, as opposed to relying on their fingers, was found to significantly enhance their memory and problem-solving abilities.

Vinod Menon, a senior author and psychiatrist at Stanford, articulated that mental calculations serve as a valuable framework for learning and solidifying facts into a child’s long-term memory.

The practice of mentally performing mathematical calculations bears resemblance to the methods employed by the legendary Shakuntala Devi, often referred to as the ‘human-computer.’ From a very young age, she astounded the world by effortlessly solving complex mathematical problems in her mind. Her ability to multiply two 13-digit numbers in just 28 seconds earned her the prestigious Guinness World Record in 1980.

Mathematics intricately weaves through the fabric of our world, owing to its precision and reliability. Encouraging children to embrace mental calculations represents a pioneering approach to ensuring that they retain essential mathematical procedures and steps over time.
